How Often Should You Race?

The answer can be quite individual, yet there are some general guidelines that you should consider before hitting the register button for your next race!

Before we dive into some of the specifics, it's always important to feel highly intrinsically motivated to train for and race the desired race. There can be many good reasons to do a race, but if you are not motivated to do it, then it will make training for it that much more difficult!

Recovery Time

When planning your race schedule, it's important to factor in recovery time. The time it takes you to recover can depend on the race distance/duration, the surface or type of course (trail, road, mountain, uphill, downhill, etc.), the runner's experience, your preparation, and many other factors, including work-life balance and daily stress loads.

It's important to schedule enough recovery time from the races you've scheduled and give yourself enough time to train and improve.

Race Priority - "A" Races & Race Seasons

It's a good practice to divide your year into race seasons or themes of what you want to accomplish. For example, one season should be dedicated to shorter races (5k / 10k / Half marathons) and another to the marathon or ultra-marathon. Breaking up the season into what race(s) are your priority can help you focus on how you execute your races and training and what the key areas you want to work on are.

This not only helps you work toward your goal in a more meaningful way, but it also allows you to allocate your mental energy appropriately during your training. There can be times when you can be more forgiving to yourself and other times or areas of focus where you need to be more critical.

What Works Best for You and Your Life

The most important thing is that you do what is important to you. Going to races with friends and celebrating your accomplishments is very important, and everyone's goals for a race are different.

Races cost money, and logistics can sometimes be difficult. The time of year and weather should be considered when choosing a race. Do you want to train in the winter for a road marathon in the spring and train in the heat of the summer for an ultra trail race in the fall? Ultimately, it is up to you and what gives you the most joy and satisfaction.

Race Ranges

There are so many great races both locally/nationally/internationally that it can be overwhelming what to choose. Use the following guidelines to see how often you should be racing what distances throughout the year.

5k: 1-6 times/year

10k: 1-4 times/year

1/2 Marathon:: 1-3 times/ year

Marathon: 1-2 times/ year

Summary

In summary, there's no single answer to how often you should race, but once you consider costs, recovery, motivation, and life balances, you are more equipped to make the right decisions about your race schedule.

One of the most significant factors to consider is intrinsic motivation. Do you have the drive to do this/these race(s) because it's enjoyable or it's interesting to you? If not, and you are doing this for an external reward or pressure, then you might want to think twice.
